Lot 201. Fenton Kittens Whimsey 2" Spittoon Marigold

Fenton’s Kitten’s pattern was made for children – the cup and saucer are displayed in a 1919 Butler Bros. ad as a ‘Child’s Handled Cup and Saucer’. This whimsied piece is a tiny spittoon shape in marigold. It is from the Rinehart collection (and one of two colors in the auction), and has a note inside describing the provenance and the story behind the shape. Very desirable whimsey.

On the note inside of the marigold Kittens spittoon, Gracie Rinehart wrote:

‘This little Kitten spittoon was found years ago at a yard sale in Parkersburg. The story was told it was made as a joke for a young worker who used snuff. The workers slipped it in his dinner pail. The boys mother found it and told him – He said “destroy it – the Co. will think I stole it” Of course she did not and used it on the stove to hold matches to light her gas burners. One can certainly see some wear in the center.

We loved the story and Byron accidentally telling it to a man who told him the same story – telling of how he worked at Fenton and had sold the Kitten piece at a yard sale. We were glad to have the true story verified. Coincidentally – the man died suddenly in a short time.

I felt this should belong with this little Kitten – it’s always been quite special to me and Byron too. I hope if it ever has to be sold – someone will treasure it as we have for the long yrs. we’ve had it.

Lot 292. Millersburg Strawberry Wreath Round Compote (blank leaf) Olive Green

This Millersburg Strawberry wreath small compote has the ‘absentee leaf’ – one of the leaves in the pattern has the outline, but no stippling or detail inside. There are very few of these known. This olive green round compote has the typical Millersburg wide panel exterior.

Lot 293. Millersburg Strawberry Wreath Ruffled Compote Green

This 6 3/4″ tall radium Millersburg Strawberry Wreath compote in green is bright and colorful. The 6 ruffles let you enjoy the pattern from almost any angle. This is a good example of a nice compote.

Lot 294. Millersburg Strawberry Wreath Large Deep Ice Cream Shape Bowl Green

This 8 5/8″ Strawberry Wreath large deep ice cream shape bowl in radium green has exceptional colorful iridescence. Blue, green, fuchsia and yellow flow around the berry wreath that circles the inside of the bowl (has a small dot in the middle to help identify the pattern as Strawberry Wreath), and the wide panel exterior doesn’t interfere with the interior pattern. This beautiful piece has the typical Millersburg starred base.

Lot 295. Millersburg Strawberry Wreath Large Flared Bowl Vaseline

Millersburg’s Strawberry Wreath pattern, easily identified by the four berries hanging toward the blank center of the bowl, is seldom seen in vaseline. This 9 1/2″ flared bowl is another great example of Millersburg vaseline.

Lot 296. Millersburg Strawberry Wreath Ruffled Bowl Vaseline

Millersburg vaseline can be pretty tough to find, and it is almost always a very pretty yellow colored base glass. This 6 1/2″ bowl has 8 ruffles and is a neat size for the Strawberry Wreath pattern (no berry in the center). The exterior is the wide panel, and the base has the Millersburg star.

Lot 297. Millersburg Strawberry Wreath Rosebowl Marigold

This cute 6 1/8″ Strawberry Wreath rosebowl in Marigold has Millersburg’s typical radium iridescence. Lot 298. Millersburg Blackberry Wreath Tri-corner Sauce Bowl Marigold

Scarce Millersburg Blackberry Wreath 5 3/4″ tri-corner sauce in Marigold with nice, bright iridescence. The exterior pattern is wide panel, and it has the starred base. It does have some roughness on one corner, but it’s too small to get a picture.

Lot 299. Blackberry Wreath Large Ice Cream Shape Bowl Blue

This large ice cream shaped Millersburg Blackberry Wreath 9 5/8″ bowl in blue has very nice iridescence, and is part of our ‘blue Millersburg’ collection. With a center berry, wreathed by 4 berries and surrounded by leaves and tendrils, it is a lovely pattern. The exterior is wide panel, and the base is starred. There is a small chip on one of the berries. Purchased from the Leonard collection.

Lot 300. Millersburg Blackberry Wreath 6 1/2" Plate Marigold

Millersburg’s Blackberry Wreath pattern is exceedingly difficult to find in a plate – this 6 1/2″ marigold plate is actually flatter than some, and has wonderful iridescence. The pattern is similar to a few other patterns – Blackberry Wreath has a center berry (with leaves) and a smooth paneled exterior.

Lot 301. Blackberry Wreath Large Ruffled Bowl Blue

This large Millersburg Blackberry Wreath 6 ruffle 10 1/4″ bowl has above average iridescence, and is tougher to find in blue. The center berry helps distinguish the pattern, the reverse is wide panel with the starred base. There is a small sliver on the marie, and a small chip underneath the marie. A very nice piece of Millersburg blue.

Lot 302. Northwood Lotus Land Bonbon Amethyst

Northwood did very few of these bonbons (and it’s the only shape known in the Lotus Land pattern). This one has above average color, and a very pleasing shape so that you can see the pattern well. The exterior is plain.

Lot 303. Northwood Strawberry Ruffled Bowl Peach Opal

Satin iridescence covers this Northwood Strawberry 8 ruffle 8 3/4″  bowl – really hard to find in peach opal with this much opal. The four groups of strawberries and leaves cover the inside of the bowl. And the exterior basketweave pattern shows through as a background.

Lot 304. Northwood Strawberry Stippled 9 1/4" Plate Green

Northwood Strawberry is a nice pattern to collect, they have so many colors. This stippled green 9 1/4″ plate is tough to find (and has the basketweave exterior). It does have the trademarked underlined N in a circle, verifying that it is old Northwood. Pretty blues and greens cover the face of this plate. There is a string of green pigment (pictured), not uncommon in Northwood green pieces, and there are quite a few small bubbles.

Lot 305. Northwood Wisteria Whimsey Bank White

There are some very realistic patterns in carnival glass, and Wisteria has very beautiful flowers cascading down the lattice. This Northwood Wisteria whimsey was made from a white tumbler – the top has been pinched in to make the money slot. Doty lists it as the only tumbler bank whimsey he has ever heard of – it is from the Leonard collection. It does have a 1/2″ chip on top of the base, but in a rarity like this, that has less importance.

Lot 306. Northwood Memphis 8 Piece Fruit Bowl Set Ice Blue

This beautiful ruffled ice blue Memphis fruit bowl, base and 6 cups (by Northwood) has nice pastel iridescence. More common in amethyst and marigold, the ice blue is tougher to find.

This beautiful purple vase is 17 1/2″ tall and has a 5 1/4″ plunger base (banded) with an 8 3/8″ top diameter . The iridescence is lovely. It does have a little buffing on one of the ruffles.

Lot 308. Northwood Thin Rib Mid-size Vase Sapphire Blue

This great sapphire Northwood mid-size funeral Thin Rib vase shimmers with pastel iridescence. Standing 13 3/4″ tall, it is an impressive piece of carnival glass. The 4 3/4″ base size defines it as a ‘mid-size’ funeral vase (not the height). Sapphire is a very collectible color – occasionally described as “Windex” blue, it is a vivid pastel color.

Lot 309, Northwood Fruits & Flowers Ruffled Bowl Ice Green

This beautiful pastel ice green 6 ruffle 7 3/8″ bowl in the Northwood Fruits & Flowers pattern is covered in nice blues, yellows and fuchsia. Marked with the Northwood trademark (underlined N in a circle) it has a basketweave exterior pattern. This is one pretty bowl!

A beautiful large Sapphire blue Northwood Peacock & Urn 10″ bowl in the ice cream bowl shape (curving up on the edges). This is a super example of this color with even pastel iridescence. This piece was from the Bev Franzen collection.

Lot 311. Northwood Peacock & Urn Large Ice Cream Shape Bowl Lime Green

A beautiful large 10″ lime green Northwood Peacock & Urn bowl in the ice cream bowl shape (curving up on the edges). This is a very nice example of this color with even iridescence. The reverse is a wide panel, and the base is smooth with the N in a circle Northwood trademark.

Lot 314. Northwood Peacock & Urn 10 3/4" Chop Plate Amethyst

Northwood’s Peacock & Urn is seldom seen in a chop plate (10 3/4″ across), making this Amethyst example a special piece of carnival glass history. The exterior is wide panel, and it is easily identified by the Northwood trademark of the underlined N in a circle on the base. Northwood’s Peacock & Urn chop plates are not extremely flat, but come out from the base in a straight line (do NOT cup up on the edge).

Lot 315. Northwood Grape & Cable 12" Chop Plate White

This super rare Northwood Grape & Cable 12″ chop plate in white is a piece you will not find again, it is the only reported chop plate in this pattern. It has basketweave as the exterior pattern. Made from the large ice cream bowl, it has nice radium iridescence.

Lot 316. Northwood Grape & Cable Master (Banquet) 14 Piece Punch Set Purple

Northwood’s Grape & Cable Master (or Banquet) Punch bowls are among the largest pieces of carnival glass – they really show off the beautiful pattern and the iridescence. Always popular in purple, this 14 piece ruffled set (bowl, base and 12 cups) , from the Bob & Sandy Nehring collection (we were glad they decided they wanted a Harley instead of this set!), they worked hard to get the best color they could. We think this is a great set.

Lot 317. Northwood Grape & Cable Master (Banquet) 14 Piece Punch Set Marigold

Northwood’s Grape & Cable Master (or Banquet) Punch bowls are among the largest pieces of carnival glass – they really show off the beautiful pattern and the iridescence. This 14 piece ruffled set (bowl, base and 12 cups) is a nice dark marigold. It does have a silica pop on the bottom of the base of the bowl, and 2 cups have chips.

Lot 318. Fenton Lotus & Grape Bonbon Blue

Lotus & Grape is a very nice pattern with alternating panels with bunches of grapes in one, and lotus flowers in the others. This blue bonbon is not uncommon – but the iridescence is: can you say electrified? You won’t find one like this easily! Purchased on one of our first trips to England from a shop on Portobello Road.

Lot 319. Fenton Lotus & Grape Bonbon Vaseline

This Fenton two-handled bonbon in the Lotus & Grape pattern is not often found in vaseline. It has the typical Fenton marigold overlay, and a plain reverse pattern – the yellow shows through vividly in the handles and the base.

Lot 320. Lotus & Grape Small Footed Bowl Celeste Blue

Fenton’s Lotus & Grape pattern was used on a variety of shapes – the small footed bowls are fun because of the variety of shapes as well as the many options of available colors. Not so frequently seen is celeste blue, and this is a good example of one. It measures 6 1/8″ across.

Lot 321. Fenton Lotus & Grape Small Footed Tri-Corner Bowl Marigold

This Fenton Lotus & Grape small footed 7″ bowl has been whimsied into a tri-corner shape, showing off the pattern of alternating panels of Lotus’ and Grapes extremely well. And the marigold color is deep and colorful.

This footed 6″ round small bowl in Fenton’s Lotus & Grape pattern has the most beautiful multi-colored, bright iridescence! Seen most often in a two-handled bonbon or a ruffled footed shape, the color on this piece just talks to you! The alternating panels of Lotus flowers and grape bunches is very appealing.

Lot 323. Fenton Lotus & Grape Small Footed Bowl Jack-in-the-Pulpit (JIP) Bowl Lime Green

This Fenton Lotus & Grape small footed 7 1/4″ bowl has been whimsied into a JIP (Jack-in-the-pulpit) shape with the back pulled up and the front pulled down, showing off the pattern extremely well. And the lime green color shows through clearly in the feet. Appears to have a popped bubble on the back (see photo below).

Lot 324. Fenton Lotus & Grape 9 3/8" Plate Marigold

Seldom seen in marigold, this Fenton Lotus & Grape 9 3/8″ plate is nice and flat. The pattern name is easy to identify, with alternating panels of Lotus, then a bunch of grapes. Purchased from the Joyce Seale collection.

Lot 326. Fenton Elks Detroit 1910 Ruffled Bowl Amethyst

Another Fenton lettered piece up for sale is this 1910 Detroit Elks 6 ruffle 7″ bowl in amethyst. These pieces of history found in carnival glass are scarce. Realizing that this little bowl is 106 years old puts our hobby in perspective!

Lot 327. Fenton Little Flowers Large 3&1 Bowl Amberina

Covered in satin iridescence, this 10″ large Fenton Little Flowers bowl (with a 3&1 edge, 3 small scallops and 1 large scallop) is difficult to find in amberina. The pattern of 8 small flowers circling the center is presumably where the pattern name comes from, and they show off well with this edge treatment.

Lot 328. Fenton Little Flowers Large Ice Cream Shape Bowl Electric Blue

This Little Flowers large 9 3/8″ ice cream shaped bowl in blue is by Fenton, and has wonderful electric iridescence. The ice cream shape (rolled up on the edge) allows all of the interior pattern to be seen. Exterior is a wide panel pattern.

Lot 341. Fenton Vintage Ruffled Sauce Bowl Celeste Blue

Fenton’s Vintage pattern is one of the many grape patterns, but one of the keys to identifying this piece is that Fenton did some Celeste Blue stretchy pieces, and this is one of them.
